This beautifully restored mews house in the heart of Notting Hill’s Ladbroke Conservation Area is a striking example of how historic charm and modern design can harmoniously coexist. Retaining much of its 19th-century character, the property has undergone a full refurbishment by Studio Jo Cowen, which has enhanced its architectural significance while optimising its functionality for contemporary living.
Key elements of the building’s history are preserved, such as the old stable door, while the original brickwork has been exposed, revealing the beauty of the structure beneath layers of paint. The layout has been thoughtfully redesigned to improve proportions, creating a sense of flow and connection between spaces. The house features open, airy spaces with carefully curated proportions, making it both inviting and functional. A standout design feature is the spiral staircase, which serves as a central, undulating element that links the floors. This staircase, with its elegant pale wood treads, white-painted metal spindles, and light wood handrail, draws the eye and serves as a focal point within the home. The combination of clean lines and soft curves gives the design a sense of both strength and warmth.
The palette, which incorporates two tones of beige, adds depth and comfort to the interior, enhancing the sense of intimacy and coziness within the modern design. The result is a home that balances high contemporary style with the warmth and charm that makes it feel welcoming and personal.
