Monson House

Scope: Planning, Design, Construction

Location: Kensal Rise, London

Type: Private Home

Duration: 11 Months

Status: Completed 2018

Studio Jo Cowen were appointed for the renovation of this large Victorian property in Kensal Rise. We were approached to completely remodel the internal layout of the house to create a bright, contemporary and airy family home.

Our brief was to design a central study to connect with the front drawing room and lofty, well-appointed kitchen with ample storage. We were also tasked with adding a living space to the rear extension and adding a sunken rear ground floor extension which would ultimately connect the living space with the garden.

Materiality, texture and light were key factors in developing the interior design. The neutral and refined material palette comprises of buff brick, light stained oak and a mixture of smooth and board marked textured concrete. The rough brick wall to the kitchen provides a textural backdrop and continues externally to the garden. Slim timber fins along the roof light provide internal privacy and solar shading filtering light into the deep open plan space at the rear of the house.

The bathrooms are complete with slate tiles, concrete effect tiles and are finished with light bronze Hansgrohe sanitary fittings and trims.

We are very pleased with the outcome of this house which we feel has a timeless elegance through its use of mixed materials and neutral tones.
