Studio Jo Cowen carefully undertook a complete rebuild of this Georgian family home in the heart of Kensington for a young family with a long-term connection to both the house and the area. The renovation was thoughtful and comprehensive, shaped around creating spaces that would grow with the family over time while quietly honoring the home’s history.
The architectural approach was refined and traditional, gently balancing the building’s heritage with subtle contemporary touches. Large framed windows were introduced to draw in light and frame views across the garden square and through to the rear gardens. Internally, the house was re-levelled and new staircases added, allowing for improved flow and a more natural connection between spaces. Rooms and doorways were carefully reconfigured to create a calm and intuitive layout.
Open-plan living areas sit comfortably alongside smaller, more intimate rooms, offering places for both shared family life and quieter personal moments. Craftsmanship became a guiding principle throughout the project, with the intention that the house should feel settled and layered, as though it had evolved gently over many years.
The owners’ art collection provided quiet inspiration for the interiors. Working closely with interior designer Stella Weatherall, furniture, fittings and bespoke pieces were thoughtfully selected to complement both the artwork and the architecture. A warm and tactile palette of materials was used, including oak flooring, rich timbers, mixed textures, high-gloss lacquer and soft lime-washed paint colours.
Subtle moments of creativity are woven throughout the house, from custom bookcases and carefully placed artwork to distinctive yet understated lighting. Together, these elements create a warm, nurturing and deeply personal home — one that feels harmonious, graceful and quietly contemporary, while remaining rooted in its heritage.
