“We thrive on wine cellar design projects of all shapes and sizes, from modern display walls to traditional vaulted-style wine cellars and from whiskey collection snugs to home bars in entertaining areas. Wine cellars are not just a function of storing wine at Studio Jo Cowen. They have the opportunity to form a spectacular part of the interior of your home. They can make corridors feel like rooms, they provide excellent view points within basements and low lit spaces. And they can form a vivid extension to your party rooms, playrooms and living rooms. Every Studio Wine Cellar project starts with understanding our client’s vision and needs. Our design consultation makes sure we capture your unique tastes and preferences, ensuring your wine storage solution fits seamlessly into your home. The key things you need to control when creating a wine cellar, wine room or any other wine storage area are: temperature, humidity and light. In general, a wine would lose its primary fruitiness rapidly if exposed to sunlight.

“Maintaining constant temperatures for wines is important. Even if the desired 13-15°C range cannot be achieved, then avoiding sharp temperature swings, from central heating systems for example, is essential.”

If the wine is stored in temperatures that are too hot, it ages too fast and. Being too cold slows down the ageing process. And, if it were to get very cold, of course, your wine could freeze. Humidity, meanwhile, needs to be between 50 and 70% to prevent corks drying out and shrinking, which can lead to oxidisation (spoiling) of the wine.

Beautiful form with meticulous function for more than a decade.”
