Studio Jo Cowen were appointed to work on the full refurbishment of a large Victorian semi-detached house in Fulham. The radical internal remodelling included a full subterranean excavation for a large basement. The entire layout of the house was redesigned and reconfigured to suit our clients’ needs and to be adaptable for modern family living.

The generous open plan ground floor area is fitted with a bespoke timber kitchen and marble island unit, to create a modern yet timeless addition that ties in with the style of the house. Timber glazed bifold doors open to the back of the house to provide views and connection out onto a newly landscaped garden.

A fully bespoke and custom designed oak staircase has been installed with a continuous solid oak handrail that elegantly flows from the basement to the second floor. Flooring throughout the house is a light washed, slightly textured oak parquet. Bespoke joinery has been designed for each room, including intricate veneer wardrobe doors and feature panelling in the study, with an elegant palette of materials including oak, deep navy, bronze and brass.

One of the unique features of this property is the exceptionally well-lit basement. Studio Jo Cowen designed an expansive rear lightwell and green wall which helps to not only soften the space, but to make the basement feel light and airy.
